Photo Hunt – Lick

When the Marines finally licked the Japanese on Iwo Jima, they raised the flag and this famous picture was taken. This picture is in the National Museum of the Marine Corps. It’s layered in glass and is really quite moving. My grandson is ‘helping’ to raise the flag. The silhouette against the light is my reflection. And if you look closely, you can see MWH’s reflection at the left side. I’m assuming that the flag behind the glass is the one raised on Iwo Jima or one that flew there. Grandson took off too quickly for me to check it out.

How did you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

As I’m writing this before midnight, I can just tell you our plans. We’re already in our jammies. We’re going to watch a couple of crazy guys do a car jump over water on ESPN at midnight. Then we’ll probably go snuggle in bed. ;-)

This is one of my favorite baby picture of Chloe. She liked to nap on Daddy’s shoulder when she was still small enough. Don’t you love how her eyes reflect the color of MWH’s shirt? If you check out the badge for my other blog, you’ll recognize that cute little face all grown up.

X Is For … X Marks the Spot

This was by far the most difficult letter in this series about quilts. There are many quilt blocks that form the letter X or when placed in a certain way form it. Finding a block that was actually called X Marks the Spot was interesting. Here’s what I found.

This is a beautiful quilt, but not the colors I would have chosen. I prefer more contrast. And I like bright colors. This quilt has shashing between the blocks. That means there is a strip of cloth between the individual blocks.

Ruby Tuesday

The World Quilt Show spent a weekend here in Lansing in 2002. I went with a couple of friends and saw some incredible quilts. This is one I really like because of the way color is used. And of course it has my favorite color – RED!

Mellow Yellow Monday and Blue Monday

We had a lighthouse Christmas tree again this year. We have a nice collection of Harbour Lights ornaments. They are as beautifully sculpted as the larger lighthouses.

We got a new ornament for Christmas this year. It’s the Grand Traverse lighthouse. And I really love the LED lights, too. They are always cool to the touch and use almost no electricity.

Photo Hunt - Twelve

Yes, I can count. There are only nine people in this picture. My daughter and her husband, MWH’s parents, my sister, MWH and me. The grandkids are sitting on the floor. My granddaughter is twelve years old. We had a really nice day just hanging out at home. We had a huge breakfast and then pizza for dinner. There’s a place in town that does gluten free pizza so we had to buy it for my daughter. She says it’s the only real pizza she’s found since being diagnosed with Celiac’s Disease. Their regular pizza is great, too.

I hope you all have had a great time with family this Christmas.

W Is For …. Wild Goose Chase

The triangles pointing toward the center are called flying geese. The block is called Wild Goose Chase. There are actually several very different blocks that go by this name, but I believe this is the one generally referred to as Wild Goose Chase.

Mellow Yellow Monday and Blue Monday

OK, first let me say that I don’t usually take pictures in public restrooms. But I just couldn’t resist this one. I took MWH to lunch at Red Robin last week for his birthday. The whole place is like being in a cartoon. Everything is colorful and lively and delicious. But when I walked into the ladies room, my first thought was, “This belongs in a blog post!” Don’t you agree? There was even a TV in the ladies room. What a hoot!

Monday Mayhem – on Thursday?

Last weekend was very hectic with our Christmas musical. Dress rehearsal on Friday night and performances on Saturday and Sunday. And our annual choir luncheon on Sunday afternoon. That was followed by a couple of hectic days. But I can’t pass up this meme. It’s fast becoming my favorite! Thanks, Harriet, for hosting!

Today's meme- What would you do if.......

What if during holiday gift giving someone gave you....

A fruit cake?

I’d say thank you. (My mom taught me well.) Later I’d give it to my sister. She actually likes fruit cake.

An ugly sweater?

It it’s handmade, I’d admire the workmanship and the effort put into making it. I have a high-efficiency, high-output internal furnace so I don’t wear sweaters. It would probably end up as a charity donation.

Deodorant?

I’d spend the rest of the day with my arms clamped to my sides and start looking for a new soap and a new deodorant. I have strange body chemistry. Dial soap makes me smell like a pig farm. I’m not joking here. It’s the same distinctive smell. Some deodorants make me smell really bad, too. If it’s invisible… Stinky!

A check for $5

I’d cash it and go out to lunch.

There are so many questions I’d love to ask him. One of which is if he gets terrible neck and shoulder pains from wearing all those gold chains.

V is for …. Virginia Reel

I have always loved this quilt block, but I’ve never made one myself. After looking at all these lovely pictures found on the internet, I may have to change that. It really isn’t as complicated as it looks. Here’s the block.

This picture is really four blocks put together. But it shows how you get these awesome four armed swirls. If you try and go scrappy within the swirl, you can end up with a confusing blur of colors. Here are a few samples I found that I hope you will enjoy.

Two wall hangings. I like the way he color is extended into the border.

This one is on point (rotated 45 degrees) so the swirls go up and down. It’s really a different look. And in this one, the color mix is great. You get variety in the fabrics without losing the design.

This one is really awesome. They’ve put stars inside stars in the middle of the swirls.

Heads or Tails

My granddaughter caught this fish the summer she was eight. Not only did she catch this large-mouth bass, she helped her great-grandmother clean and cook it. The rest of us were awarded tiny bites but Annie ate most of it.

EWWWW! This store is located near Lancaster, PA. We stopped here because of the name. The first floor is all joke merchandise with lots of potty humor. The second floor does not fit this week’s theme. It’s all Amish built furniture and cupolas. But the fudge signs… definitely undesirable.

I don’t often get to attend Christmas concerts or plays. That’s because MWH and I both sing in our church choir and we’re busy getting ready for our big Christmas musical. Frequently the things we most want to see are the same weekend as our performances.
